Welcome To EB3

This month was an exciting time for our EB peer groups for existing and aspiring NEDs, Trustees, Consultants working at board level, and board advisors. Not only did we have exceptional meetings, but we also launched our third cohort, EB3.

In EB1 we welcomed Linda Nelson as a new member. We looked at everyone’s personal wellbeing and at their work performance, as well as debating what the election meant for us all.

Conflicts of interest was a discussion point in all three groups, and our key takeaways included examples of poor practice as well as what we need to consider during our positions on boards to ensure we stay impartial.

EB1’s session concluded with member question processing which included 3 to 6 month focus, prioritisation and finding the next NED role.

EB2 concentrated on what is too close as a NED, and how to stay impartial and independent focusing on strategy rather than operational activities. They talked about setting boundaries, drama triangles and how to remove themselves. They then looked at whether work could be found in the region or do we need to travel and if so, how to find that work. A question on sustainable business models was raised and will be focused in the next future meeting, as it’s an important thing for boards to be taking an interest in.

Our newest peer group, EB3, met for the first time and they got to know each other through sign ins and working together in two groups to find an outcome to a sad story. Our excellent facilitating coach, Andrew Marsh, expanded the discussion in the plenary, to observe the roles on a board and considerations that should be taken.

Andrew introduced the cohort to Patrick Lencioni’s “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team” and the “Three Horizons Model”, to look at how a board should spend 60% of their time in the strategic zone.

Finally the group closed their first session on a discussion on how to find NED roles, why you would want to be one, and the pros and cons of incentives including employment law vs tax law.

Excitingly, next month is our joint cohort meeting, where all three cohorts will come together for a super-sized session. This is kindly being hosted by Nic Gilbert, CEO at St Cuthbert’s Care, and will feature a tour of the charity’s facilities as well as talks from Venture Zero, experts in carbon literacy and sustainability.

If you think you’d like to join one of the cohorts and improve your skills as a NED or trustee, then do get in touch!
